Lyons-hearted rocker - By Adrian Sainz
Are You an exasperated, rock-and-roll-starved average Joe (or Josephine) who yearns for something other than Kansas' "Carry on Wayward Son," replays on the radio, or the new abomination from The Backstreet Boys?
Are you tired of listening to sorry one-man acts with an acoustic guitar and a stool singing Jimmy Buffet covers or the occasional Johnny Cash song?
Well, Mike Lyons, the marketing machine-slash-rock guitar crooner may be the way to go if you are seeking an uncompromising and original act that will take your ear on a ride mixed with classic rock influences with a tad of sentimentality and emotion in the lyrics.
Lyons, who goes by just his last name nowadays, is a step below a guitar virtuoso. But, as they say, the one eyed man in a world of blind men is king. Crown Lyons, then, the master of solo rock guitar in South Florida with the exception, of course, of the guys from Box Elder and Doorway 27 and a couple of other regulars that hail from further north.
As for rockers that dedicate themselves to the Dade County music scene, Lyons is certainly a reliable source for ear-ringing rock.
From the day Kimba played the single "Going Blind" on Zeta, Lyons has been on a rock rampage, even hiring an aggressive, marketing maven to increase his exposure. Lyons' inner fire is revealed in his first album, "Thank God for Music," which is not a Christian Rock themed, album by the way.
What his first album can be for listeners is a tune-up to an original music act that has hit the South Florida scene, including the Titanic Bar and Restaurant one Friday in late November, and countless other venues since 1998 (The Warehouse, Gables Pub, Power Studios, etc.)
Lyons does not discriminate in terms of venues, and his music does not discriminate, either. Lyons pumps equal emotion into all his tunes, which communicate a passion for music and some genuine lyrics derived from life experience, to be sure. ("A true sense of power, Takes aim from the heart, By heating my emotion, Grows like madness, sets worlds apart.")
A mental journey when listening to Lyons took me to a seedy London bar, circa 1977, wearing leather pants and long, curly hair, playing my own air guitar to his Beatles-esque, Zeppelin-infused tunes. Chicks scream, Quaaludes and pot are had by all, and Lyons puffs his mane and continues his foray into rock's screechingly loud underbelly.
But I digress. Find Lyons' "Thank God for Music" album, or find the man himself, and judge. Distortion- haters need not bother.
